Other food we’ve found in Zambia – most we’ve tried, but not the fish.
• Chips – these are homemade fries – think thick “steak fries”, best eaten with a fork. Mmm
• Bream – fish served whole, including eyeballs and scary looking teeth. Popular dish here. We passed.
• Kapenta – if you are brave, try these as well. These are tiny dried fish – sometimes kept in oil, but usually just dry. They are eaten whole and served with nshima, of course.
• “Salad” seems to usually be some sort of cabbage salad, similar to coleslaw, but without the vinegar.

• Mango – when in season, ’til truly the fruit of the Gods (I thought I hated mango until I ate it in Africa)• Bananas – you can find these everywhere. They are good and inexpensive.
• Tomatoes – they always seem to be in season here. I’d buy from the street vendors – they pick them ripe, or almost-ripe, as opposed to green as in the supermarket
• Apple Max – a brand of soda, it reminds me of sparkling apple cider, but sweeter. We love it.
• Fanta – the ubiquitous soda of Africa, it seems. The flavor is rarely specified – if you ask for “Fanta”, you will get orange. There is also pineapple that is OK.
• Ginger cookies – only about 50 ¢, they come in a “tube”. Namebrand is “Ginger Nuts”, made by “Baker”. You should be able to find these in about any shop – very yummy gingersnap-type crunchy cookies.
• “Eat-Sum-More” shortbread cookies – OK, but not as nice as the nice Scottish stuff.
• Oreos – mmm. Alina noted that both the cookie and the filling were skinnier than in the States.
• Yogurt – lasts at least 4 days without refrigeration, LOL. Have a variety of flavors – tends to be runny and more easily drunk than eaten with a spoon.
• Fruit juice – all varieties are good.
• Bread – you can find sliced or unsliced bread, rolls, French bread, etc
• Butter – it’s expensive here – you can find Zambian butter or Irish butter. Most Zambians use margarine
• Cheese – also expensive. You can find cheeses from Ireland and France and a few made here in Zambia. Expect to pay the same price you do in the States
• Nutella – fabulous hazelnut-chocolate spread – you can bring it from the States if you wish.
